Pace

I began my musical life as a guitarist and performed in Boston bands  throughout the late 1980’s and early 1990’s. My life long love of hip hop and my growing record collection drove me to start DJing and making beats in the early 1990’s. My first sampler was an Ensoniq EPS 16 Plus and I have owned and operated various hardware and software beat-making systems ever since. Over the years, I have been lucky enough to perform and collaborate with a long list of creative folks in a variety of musical styles and forms.  Here are some of the highlights.

DJ performances

I have  been a semi-regular guest at the Beat Research night at the Enormous Room and have been playing nightclubs and private parties all around New England since the late 1990’s. Here are a few of the highlights.

Project MUM (2007, 2008, 2009)

MUM 09 Logo XSM

This is an annual dance party sponsored by the Somerville Arts Council that takes place under the McGrath O’Brien highway in Somerville, MA. Every August for the last few years, Todd Sargent and the VDA crew turn this small spot of lost concrete into a space-age family freakathon. This year its gonna be off the hook! August 29, 2009 under the Mcgrath O’Brien highway. Year’s supply of Tang for the best space costume.

Resound (2004) Renegade Sound System Party put together by the legendary Toneburst/Beat Research crew including fellow Boston beat scientists DJ C, DJ Flack, Sosolimited, Wayne & Wax and others.

This ongoing collaboration with Darrenator “The Bass Creator” Beaudet has generated musical monstrosities like The Dub Box™ and Basslab. Using an extensive vinyl library as our sonic pallette, we combine midi sequencing, turntables, live sampling, mixing and real time effects to generate live, electro-organic, loop-based, re/compositions.

The Pineapple Ranch Hands
Pineapple Ranch Hands CD The Pineapple Ranch Hands was a six-piece outfit that played steel-guitar-based Hawaiian style favorites from the 20’s through the 50’s and on. Mixing hulas, island chants and marches with jazz, swing and western tunes, our repertoire followed the stream of steel guitar and pumping rhythm that flows through all these styles. The band featured John “Keoni” Johnson on the big guitar, Steve “Kiwi” Bird on bass, Scott “Koka” Rogers on drums, Phil “Pilippo” Mahoney on the not-so-big guitar, Pacey “Palani” Foster on the uke, and leading the whole group gently down the stream is Tim “Kimo” Obetz on various and sundry steel guitars. Close harmony vocals and the occasional peanut gallery chorus rounded out the sound.

The Ranch Hands played clubs in Boston from the late 1990’s through the early 2000’s. In addition to a weekly residency at the Middle East Corner in Cambridge, the Ranch Hands appeared at the Boston Aids Walk and the Peabody Essex Museum and and shared the stage with acts like Junior Brown, The Wheelers and Dealers, Cranky Frank an the Cranktones, Combustible Edison, The Electric Logs and many, many others.

Emma-O

Pacey Foster (vx, guitar) Steve Bird (vx, bass) and Scott Rogers (drums). This was a late 1990’s power trio that wrote ironic/idiotic, groove-based alterna-rock. Imagine Soul Coughing and The Presidents of the United States of America going to Chris Cornell’s house to listen to Zappa records. We practiced in the Revolving Museum in Fort Point and played at places like Mama Kins, TT The Bears, Plough and Stars, Linwood Grille, Etc.

Franc Graham Band

Franc Graham (vx, guitar), Jerome Dupree/Eric Paull/Billy Conway (drums), Scott Corneille (bass), Paecy Foster (turntables, sampler, guitar, vx), Chris Rival (guitar, produced/engineered).  Franc is still gigging locally and was a mainstay at Toad/Lizard Lounge in the early 2000’s. We opened for Lucinda Williams in Hartford on September 10, 2001.  We made a bunch of cool records and one is still on the way.
